Senior boys book regional curling berth

It was a busy week for high school curlers from Humboldt Collegiate.

The week kicked off on Feb. 6 with the pre-district championships held in their own backyard at the Humboldt Curling Club.

It was a really good tournament for the Humboldt boys teams as Humboldt One knocked off Wakaw in the first round and Humboldt Two in the second round to clinch the first of two available spots at the district championship.

Humboldt Two meanwhile, opened their tournament with a win over Bellevue, before the aforementioned loss to Humboldt One.

Despite the loss the tournament was not over for Humboldt Two as they were moved to the B-Side of the tournament where they knocked off Wakaw to earn the second and final spot at the district championships.

In mixed action, Humboldt opened their bon spiel with a win over Englefeld One, before falling to Englefeld Two in the A-Side championship, relegating them to the B-Side championship, where they fell to Englefeld One.

Despite the loss Humboldt advanced to the district championship, because Englefeld One could not go.

The busy week continued for the senior curlers as they traveled to Wadena Feb. 10-11 for the district championships.

Humboldt One continued the momentum built from the pre-district tournament as they cruised through the early part of the tournament knocking off Muenster in round one, Strasbourg in round two and Foam Lake in round three, booking themselves the first of two spots in the district final, while also earning a guaranteed spot at regionals.

The district final did not go so well for Humboldt One as they fell to Muenster in a first round rematch.

Humboldt Two meanwhile, struggled as they dropped their opening round match contest against Lanigan, relegating them to the B-Side.

After wobbling in their first round contest Humboldt Two recovered in their second game as they knocked off Strasbourg but they could not keep the momentum going, falling to eventual district champion Muenster in the third round, eliminating them from the bon spiel.

Things did not go any better for Humboldt in mixed curling action as they dropped their first round contest against Strasbourg relegating them to the B-Side, where they fell to eventual district runner up Ituna in the next round.

As the lone representative, the Humboldt One senior boys team will next move on to Prince Albert for the Regional Championships Mar. 3-4.

Hawks in the lead as Panthers and Chargers continue chase

With just a couple weeks left in the basketball regular season teams from all four Humboldt based schools were busy jockeying for position.

Junior Girls

The HCI Mohawks picked up a win in their lone game of the week as they knocked off the Lake Lenore Lancers 42-9 in North West “A” action.

With the win the Mohawks improve their record to 4-5 on the season, leaving them in fourth place in the six-team league, four points ahead of fifth place Annaheim and four points behind third place St. Brieux.

In North West “B” action, the St. Augustine Hawks dropped their fourth game in a row and continue to look for their first win of the season as they fell 33-26 against the St. Brieux Crusaders.

With the loss the Hawks’ record falls to 0-8-1 on the season and leaves them in sixth place in the six-team league, five points behind the fifth place Crusaders.

Junior Boys

In North Central action, the St. Augustine “8” Hawks continue their run of dominant play as they blitzed the Middle Lake Avengers 56-21.

The battle for second place meanwhile, continues to be a tight contest as both the St. Dominic Chargers and the Humboldt Public Panthers picked up wins last week with the Chargers beating the Avengers 38-12 and the Panthers beating the St. Augustine “7” Hawks 36-15.

With the wins the Chargers improve their record to 4-2-1 on the season and remain just a single point ahead of the Panthers (4-3) with both teams chasing the “8” Hawks (6-0-1).

At the other end of the spectrum sits the “7” Hawks who sit in fifth in the five-team league with a record of 0-6-1, leaving them two points behind the fourth place Avengers.
