A family divided between Pakistan and Thailand is receiving support from Humboldt by way of a fundraiser and education night at the Black Pepper on June 14.

Humboldt Black Pepper owner Nadeem Bhatti hosted the event on behalf of the Committee to Assist Persecuted in Pakistan with around 40 people raising $2037.50 for Gul Sher and his family.

Sher escaped to Thailand in 2013 after witnessing the assassination of Bhatti’s uncle, Shahbaz Bhatti, a Pakistani cabinet minister who spoke out against Christian persecution.

His family remains in Pakistan and is under threat if Sher ever testifies, says Nadeem.

Money raised is going to help with sponsorship for Sher and his family to come to Canada. This is the first fundraiser for the family, with $36,000 needed for the family under Canadian sponsorship laws, says Nadeem.

Growing up as a Christian in Pakistan, Nadeem saw many examples of how Christian people are persecuted. He shared some of his stories during the education night.
