Tisdale will host the 2019 TELUS Cup West Regional.

The best AAA midget hockey teams of Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Northern Ontario – and the host Trojans – will compete for the right to move on to the nationals in April 2019.

Brett Casavant, the Trojans’ president, got confirmation from Lloyd Friesen, the president of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League, the morning of March 7.

“[I was just] super excited. We got it. There’s a bid committee that we have that put a ton of work into this bid – and our executive,” he said.

“I’m just really excited to be successful with it for the benefit it will give to the Trojans, the hockey rink, the Tisdale community and the whole Northeast.”

The last time Tisdale hosted the event was in 2006.

Friesen said the Trojans’ bid was chosen by an independent committee that looked over the submissions.

“Any member of the league would have been a super host,” he said. “We know that we host well in our league and Tisdale will represent our league well as they host this event leading to the national event.”

The league president said he was looking forward to the event.

“Tisdale has always been very, very supportive of their hockey club and the organization, Friesen said. “I know the community will become involved and will support this event with a lot of passion.”

The regionals are expected to be held in early April 2019. Chairing the organization effort is Dwight Olson, who also chaired the event in 2006, and Scott Janke, who once played for the team.

The team had made an unsuccessful bid for the 2016 cup.
