TISDALE — Tisdale-raised forward Connor Hvidston has signed a Western Hockey League (WHL) standard player agreement with the Swift Current Broncos.

Hvidston was selected by the Broncos with the opening pick in the seventh round, 133rd overall, in the 2019 WHL Draft.

“I was really excited knowing Swift has such a good organization and you only hear good things about it,” Hvidston said. “It was my goal from a young hockey player, you wish to hear your name called in the draft. I was really excited when it happened.”

Born in 2004 and raised in Tisdale, he AP’d for the Tisdale Trojans during multiple games in the 2018-19 season.

For the 2019-20 season he was selected to join the Yorkton Maulers U18 AAA team.

During that period, he scored 14 goals and 14 assists, being named the Maulers Top Rookie, Top Scorer, Top Forward and Team MVP.

In the 2020-21 season, he scored six goals and six assists before the league was paused due to the pandemic. This left the Maulers with only seven games.

“Yorkton has been really good for me. If I would have stayed in Tisdale I wouldn’t have gotten that kind of development. Coaches Ed [Zawatsky] and Cody [Bowtell] have been really key.”

Hvidston is expected to play forward with the Broncos, but the exact position has not been established yet.

In preparation for his role, he’s planning to focus on his strength training.

“I’m going to work on my strength and be in the gym and try to get stronger before because I’ll be playing against 19 and 20 year olds and I’m only 16 or 17,” Hvidston said. “We have a gym in the basement in Tisdale – I’ll be using that a bit this summer.”

Should Hvidston not make the team through the remainder of the draft process, he has committed in December to playing the 2021-22 year with the Melfort Mustangs in the SJHL.
