HUMBOLDT — Twenty three strong bodies from across the province took to Elgar Petersen arena to compete in the Summer Sizzler’s regional strongman competition.

The event was held by the Canadian Alliance of Amatuer Strength Athletics (CAASA) during the Summer Sizzler on June 15.

>Cody Seminuk of Regina, Ryan Vance of Calgary, Travis Krushelniki of Regina and Ray Zich of Brooks, Alta. took the top four spots of the 12 male competitors. Of the 11 women, the top four positions were taken by Hanah Brock of Regina, Brittany Brecht of Regina, Lou-Anne Stefankiw of Humboldt and Christine Cardenas of Humboldt, respectively.

The placeholders – who competed in events including an overhead press medley, keg toss, and deadlifts – are invited to participate in CAASA’s provincial competition in Regina come August, “to find out who Saskatchewan’s strongest man and who Saskatchewan’s strongest woman are,” said Brad Provick, the event’s organizer.

Strength athletics is “not about coming out and playing a game of softball or something for fun,” Provick said.

“Most of these athletes, it’s seven days a week. It’s a lot of dedication, a lot of nutrition, a lot of sleep, a lot of eating that they have to put in.”

“Whether they’re at the gym or not, they’re thinking about how their going to optimize their training, what they’re going to do,” Provick said.

Recently, the dedication has become shared by a variety of walks of life.

“It used to just be a sport for huge, bulky guys.” Provick said. “Now there’s lightweight women, there’s older folks... it’s great to see so many women and men of different age groups – light and heavy people.”

CAASA’s provincial competition will be held in Regina through Aug. 5 and 6.
