HUMBOLDT — A U13 girls’ volleyball team in its first year is hosting a tournament at St. Augustine School.

The Humboldt Hustlers, a club volleyball team, will face two teams from Saskatoon, two from North Battleford, and a team from White City/Pilot Butte on Jan. 11.

“We wanted to do a fundraiser and a home tournament is probably the best opportunity to do a fundraiser plus have some fun, get some more experience with our volleyball skills,” said Heather Zazula, the team’s head coach.

Club volleyball, sanctioned by Sask Volleyball, goes from October to April, after most of the school season is complete. Other communities in the regions, like Lanigan, Watrous and Rose Valley, have club teams.

“It just gives these girls that are still interested in volleyball an opportunity to continue on with their skills,” Zazula said.

The team has been practicing around twice a week since October, and held a conditioning session the first week of January to work off the holiday feasts.

The members of the team said they are looking forward to the tournament.

“We feel excited,” said Angela Tan, one of the players

“I feel like it's going to be very fun to learn how this actually works, and have like a new opportunity by doing this sport and getting to touch the ball,” added Teagan Zazula, another teammate.

The tournament starts at 9 in the morning on Jan. 11 at St. Augustine School, with the gold medal game starting at 6:30 p.m. Mayor Rob Muench is expected to hand out the medals to the winners. There will also be a raffle and a 50/50.

“It's just a fun way to spend your Saturday,” Heather Zazula said.

“It would be excellent for everyone to come out and cheer the girls on.”
