HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Minor Hockey Day is returning to the community, with an added focus on indoor events.

“Humboldt Minor Hockey Day is a day to bring all the hockey families together if they’re not out of town playing a game,” said Brenda Behiel, lead organizer with Minor Hockey Day.

“It’s just getting everyone together, visiting your neighbour, coming to the rink, grabbing yourself a bun and the kids getting their face painted and visiting your neighbour that maybe this year your child is on a different team so you don’t get to see them as much.”

The event takes place on Jan 18.

The morning and early afternoon will have the Saskatchewan Hockey Association doing scheduled on ice and dryland training for Humboldt Minor Hockey players at the Elgar Petersen Arena. Afterwards, home games will begin.

From 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. there will be a tailgate party in the large meeting room, across from Jubilee Hall. The party will have free games, activities and face painting for all ages.

“This year the activities are more inside than outside just because we don’t know what the weather will be like,” Behiel said. “So it’s very similar from last year.”

Optional draws will take place at this time in the large meeting room. This is open to anyone.

The Humboldt Minor Hockey Association is going to donate the proceeds back to local charities including KidSport and Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Behiel said getting together with other hockey families is important because hockey is about more than just the game.

“It’s the hotel stays, and the carpools, and the volunteers, and this is just Humboldt Minor Hockey’s Day of trying to bring everyone together – thank the coaches, thank the volunteers and just have a fun day.”

At 6:30 p.m. the Broncos will take to the ice, with a puck toss between the second and third period that will go on sale when the tailgate party begins.

Behiel encourages anyone in the community to come out to the rink, watch the games being played, and stop by the large meeting room.

“Everyone is welcome. We would love to see the grandmas, and the aunts, and the uncles and the cousins,” she said.
