Melfort Mustangs lose Game 4 of finals in overtime

MELFORT — The Melfort Mustangs and Battlefords North Stars battled into overtime. In the end, Battefords made the winning shot. Battlefords won Game 4 of the SJHL finals on April 17 6OT-5, putting them ahead 3-1 in the series.

MELFORT — The Melfort Mustangs and Battlefords North Stars battled into overtime. In the end, Battefords made the winning shot.

Battlefords won Game 4 of the SJHL finals on April 17 6OT-5, putting them ahead 3-1 in the series.

A little more than four minutes into the first period, Carson Albrecht of the Mustangs scored the first goal. Thirty-seven seconds later, the Battlefords' Elijah Loon-Stewardson responded with his team's first goal. Before the halfway mark of the period, Braydon Buziak scored a power play goal for the Battlefords.

Melfort's Tyson Meyers tied the game quickly in the second period, followed by a goal from his teammate, Tanner Zentner. Battlefords then notched three goals: one by Loon-Stewardson, one by Ryan Granville and a power play goal by Owen Lamb.

The Mustangs quickly evened the score in the third period with a power play goal by Colin Schmidt and a goal by Albrecht.

In overtime, Dylan Esau scored the winning goal.

Noah Giesbrecht of the Mustangs stopped 37 out of 43 shots, while his counterpart Joel Grzybowski stopped 31 out of 4.
