MELFORT — When Marshall Skapski made his post-secondary decision, he chose not only to continue playing the game he loves but also to serve his country.

The former Melfort Mustangs defenceman has committed to suit up for the Royal Military College of Canada’s men’s hockey team. The Abbotsford product is joining the Navy to be a logistics officer.

“I chose RMC because of the challenge and opportunity it offers,” he said of the Kingston institution. “I love the team atmosphere, and I want to be a part of sustaining Canada’s freedom.”

The RMC Paladins compete in hockey in U Sports’ Ontario University Athletics conference. Skapski is looking forward to playing five more years while earning an education. He plans to study military psychology.

“That interests me because I love finding out what makes people do the things they do, and I think there are endless possibilities to explore when it comes to the mind,” Skapski said.

He recorded a goal, 13 points, and 55 penalty minutes in 40 games for Melfort last season.

“Marshall is a great hockey player and person and we couldn’t be happier for his commit to RMC.” Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins said in a media release. “Marshall is the typical do-what-it-takes hockey player. Whether it’s shutting down a top line, or blocking multiple shots, he’s the guy you want on your backend. We’re so thankful he joined our team this year and wish him the best with RMC.”

Skapski started his junior career in his home province of BC. He had played for three different Junior A teams before being acquired in November by the Mustangs. “I loved my time in Melfort; great place to play junior hockey,” Skapski said. “We had a fantastic group of guys, which made it so enjoyable. I made a lot of memories there and friends for life. I want to thank my coaches and the Melfort Mustangs organization for trading for me.”

Donald Commits

After three seasons playing close to home with the Mustangs, Star City’s Boedy Donald is headed west. The defenceman has committed to play for Red Deer College in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

“We are very proud of Boedy and what he accomplished with the Melfort Mustangs and the SJHL. He definitely deserves this opportunity with Red Deer College,” Blevins said. “Boedy was an assistant captain on our hockey club and brought tremendous leadership to our dressing room. His character is through the roof and Red Deer is getting an outstanding person and player.”

Donald started his junior career with the Kindersley Klippers in 2014-15. After two seasons there, Donald went to the Nipawin Hawks. He was acquired by Melfort during the 2016-2017 campaign. This past winter Donald posted career highs of five goals, 14 assists, and 19 points. He helped Melfort to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League finals.
