There is only so much learning a team can do in practice.
That’s why the Humboldt Collegiate Mohawks put their practice skills to the test in a controlled scrimmage against Rosetown on Aug. 29 in Saskatoon.
“Sometimes when we practice a certain skill, the learning of that skill doesn’t really happen until you are on the field,” said head coach Cory Popoff. “It was a good opportunity for us to bring to reality the things we were teaching in practice about certain responsibilities in certain positions and by the end of the scrimmage we were firing on all cylinders. It was a great evening for us as a football team.”
The scrimmage was a good chance for the Mohawks to not only put to use the skills they learned in practice but also for the players and coaches to get used to certain players being in certain positions.
“The players played excellent in the spots that we played them in with a minor few changes. Moving forward we’ll have a depth chart that will prove to be quite a competitive fit for any team that we play,” said Popoff.
While the contest was a scrimmage, with neither team playing special teams, Popoff said he was pleased with how his team was able to play on both sides of the ball.
“Our defense showed that they were fairly tough and able to slow the ball and make some good tackles,” he said. “Our run game was pretty strong and our passing game’s coming right along, so it was just fantastic.”
With the controlled scrimmage going well for the Mohawks, the club will have a week of practice to get set for their first regular season contest Sept. 7 against Tisdale.
Heading into that contest, Popoff said the main key for the club will be ensuring that players are in the right positions to succeed.
Kick off is set for 4 pm in Tisdale.
