The U16 Humboldt Hurricanes boys soccer team recently claimed the silver medals at the Harder Avalon Classic Tournament in Saskatoon.

“I am very proud of how our team played seeing as how half of our team is made up with boys young enough to play in the age group below at U14 and as a group they had never played a game together before this tournament,” U16 head coach Joel Spence wrote in an email interview. “So the future is looking very bright for us.”

Humboldt lost 3-1 to the North Battleford Santos and 5-1 to the SUSC Kings in pool play. However, in the semifinal round the Hurricanes demonstrated resiliency by bouncing back to down the Kings, 3-1.

“The boys took what they learned from (the earlier game) and came out in the semi finals and really put the Kings on their heels by dictating the play of the game by being very aggressive early,” Spence wrote. “The play was hardly in our defensive zone the entire game which made life a lot easier on some tired players.”

Humboldt fell 5-2 in the finals to the Santos. Spence praised his team’s play in the finals. The Hurricanes led 2-0 at one point. Having only one substitute player compared to their opponents’ six took a toll on the team. Spence said the Hurricanes never stopped fighting until the final whistle blew. He was pleased with his team’s play at the tournament.

“I think the thing that allowed us to be most successful as a team was the way the boys came in with a game plan and really stuck to it even when we were down at points in the games,” Spence wrote. “Everybody had a specific role and they played those roles very well individually and collectively as a team.”
