It will be a busy two weeks for slo-pitch players in Humboldt.

Two men’s teams took the field in Saskatoon to compete at the Slo-pitch National (SPN) Saskatchewan provincials Aug. 18-19 with The Humboldt Hitmen and These Guys taking on 14 teams in the intermediate division.

Teams from across the province converged on Saskatoon with the furthest being from Weyburn and Moose Jaw.

The Hitmen are keeping their tradition alive with this being around the tenth year that Chris Stadnyk has gotten a team together to take to provincials.

It is fun to get the guys together to play some ball, he says.

“You get the guys together, the best from around town here and surrounding communities and we just go and have fun and play ball, something we love to do.”

The Hitmen played well, says Stadnyk, placing around fifth place, but still not as well as they wanted to, he says.

“The sticks fell apart when they shouldn’t have and a lot of errors cost us a lot of games.”

This was a good first year for These Guys, says Dawson Atamanchuk with the team, with a couple of close games making for exciting ball.

“We were playing some teams in division one and only ended up losing by a couple runs. Boys played well and had a lot of fun and we’re definitely looking forward to next year.”

And ball season is not over quite yet for Stadnyk, with another team heading back to Saskatoon Aug. 25-26 to compete in the Co-ed competition.

The top four teams will have a berth into the national competition, according to SPN Saskatchewan with Saskatoon hosting the 2019 national events August long weekend.

The women and men are all fired up for the coming weekend, says Stadnyk.

“The women always come to watch. Let’s give them a chance considering nationals are in Saskatoon next year and give them a chance to play.”
