Ontario University Athletics (OUA) will have a very Humboldt Broncos feel next season after Matthieu Gomercic announced his commitment to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks.

Gomercic becomes the third Broncos player to announce their commitment to OUA teams this summer, after Kaleb Dahlgren announced plans to play at York University and Bryce Fiske announced plans to join the same Ridgebacks program.

“I’m very excited to join the Ridgebacks this upcoming season,” said Gomeric in a press release. “Playing university hockey is a goal that I set for myself and UOIT is now giving me the opportunity to fulfill both my hockey and academic goals.”

The Winnipeg, Man. native joins the Ridgebacks program after playing four junior A seasons, two with the Steinbach Pistons, and the most recent two with the Humboldt Broncos.

Gomercic was acquired by the Broncos in May 2016, completing a deal with the Pistons.

In his two seasons with the green and gold, Gomercic who turned 21 on July 21, posted 15 goals, 32 assists, 47 points, and 89 penalty minutes in 96 regular season contests.

In eight playoff games with the green and gold, the 6’3” forward posted four assists and 25 penalty minutes.

“We are very excited to add Matthieu to our program,” said Ridgebacks head coach Curtis Hodgins in a press release. “He is a versatile forward who can play all three forward positions if needed and can chip in with some offence as well. He has a big frame, protects pucks well and plays a complete game, which will fit in nicely with our program.”

Gomercic becomes the third Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League player to join the Ridgebacks this season, after Fiske and Nipawin Hawks forward Brett Harasymuk announced their commitments earlier this summer.
