The Humboldt Hammerheads collected the team points title in the clubs’ lone trip to the pool last week, at the Watrous Whitecaps Invitational Swim Meet in Watrous on July 14.

The Hammerheads sent 26 swimmers to the meet, where they competed in 25, 50, 100, and 200m races capturing 31 firsts, 24 seconds, and 24 thirds in individual races.

The Hammerheads’ 26 swimmers were part of 113 swimmers in total from eight different clubs including Humboldt, Saskatoon, Watrous, Shellbrook, Nipawin, Rosetown, Melfort and Biggar.

With provincial qualifying just a week away, the Hammerheads were in fine form at the Whitecaps meet as they collected 35 personal best times.

The girls led the charge for the Hammerheads, as their 17 girls picked up 23 firsts, 18 seconds, and 15 thirds in individual races.

The Hammerheads saw many of their female swimmers collect five or six individual top three finishes, as Aidra Anglestad, Sophia Babagonio, Ashley Hinz, Lauren Hinz, Lauryn MacLean, Sabrina MacLean, and Charlize Parish combined to collect 40 top three finishes including 19 firsts, 13 seconds and eight thirds in individual races.

The boys meanwhile, sent nine to the meet, where they brought home eight firsts, six seconds and nine thirds in individual races.

While the girls saw a number of swimmers collect five or six top three finishes, so too did the boys with Cuyler Brooks and Gabriel Babagonio each reaching six, as the pair combined to collect six firsts, four seconds, and two thirds.

With the club enjoying a number of top three finishes in individual races, the Hammerheads were able to use those finishes to collect a number of individual points medals as well, including four gold, one silver, and three bronze.

Looking ahead

With provincial qualifying next on the docket for the Hammerheads, the club will enjoy a week of practice before traveling to Biggar on July 21 for the provincial semi-finals.
