The Humboldt Hammerheads enjoyed a busy, yet successful weekend as they collected 24 combined medals at their swimming meets on July 7 in Melfort, and July 8 in Nipawin.

Melfort

The Hammerheads kicked off their week on a high note as they collected 13 individual aggregate point medals, including three gold, seven silver, and three bronze.

The Hammerheads sent 50 swimmers to the meet, and while they managed just 13 medals, the swimmers enjoyed solid meets.

While it was the Hammerhead’s first meet of the year featuring longer events, the club still managed to set multiple personal best times.

“A number of swimmers faced new races, whether longer distances or new strokes, and did very well in their new challenge,” wrote the Hammerheads in an email to the Journal.

After a fierce day of competition, the Hammerheads saw Gabe Babagonio, Lauren Hinz, and Sophia Babagonio collect gold, Jorja Yeager, Cohen Gasper, Abbey McLarty, Sabrina MacLean, Charlize Parish, Darren Romanuik, and Kelly Romanuik collect silver, and Sawyer Hillestad, Aaden Kozar, and Aidra Anglestad collect bronze.

Nipawin

After enjoying a brief night off, the Hammerheads were back in the pool the following day when they visited Nipawin for the Nipawin Lions Swim Meet.

“This was the first trip for the Hammerheads to the new pool facility in Nipawin.  The nice weather made for another great day in the pool,” said the Hammerheads.

Success again followed the Hammerheads in their second meet in as many days as the club picked up 11 individual aggregate points medals including five gold, four silver, and two bronze.

After sending 50 swimmers to the meet in Melfort, the Hammerheads saw 28 swimmers attend the meet in Nipawin.

Sophia and Gabe Babagonio once again collected gold medals in individual points races, and were joined by Rebecca Gabriel, Sabrina MacLean, and Charlize Parish, while Abbey McLarty, Darren Romanuik, Megan Brooks, and Lauryn MacLean added silvers, and Cohen Gasper and Cuyler Brooks brought home bronze.

Looking ahead

After a busy weekend, the Hammerheads will enjoy a week of rest and practice before traveling to Watrous on July 14 for the Hammerheads’ final tune up meet before provincial qualifiers.
