HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Special Olympics floor hockey team brought home some hardware following the Special Olympics Nationals in Thunder Bay.

Fifteen Humboldt based and one Nipawin based athlete represented Team Saskatchewan and came home with the bronze medal following the Feb. 25 to 29 competition.

The competition kicked off Feb. 27 with splitting the day after a win against Nova Scotia and a loss against Équipe Québec II. The next day saw another split day with two wins against the Oakville Cougars and a loss against Team Nova Scotia. The team won on Feb. 29 in order to bring home the bronze.

Janice Weber, Special Olympics Humboldt president, said she literally screamed for joy when she found out Team Saskatchewan had won.

The fact that the entire Humboldt floor hockey team went and came home with a medal shows what amazing athletes we have, she said. She hopes that people in the community see this and recognize these national level athletes and want to do more to support them.

“I’m hoping that with all of this that we will see more athletes join and get more people in the community to come out and volunteer with all our awesome athletes.”
