Humboldt Broncos hire new assistant coach

A new assistant coach has been hired for the Humboldt Broncos. Troy Smith will serve in the position for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. He fills the spot left empty by Scott Barney, who is serving as interim head coach.

A new assistant coach has been hired for the Humboldt Broncos.

Troy Smith will serve in the position for the remainder of the 2018-19 season. He fills the spot left empty by Scott Barney, who is serving as interim head coach.

“I am thankful that Scott has provided me this opportunity,” Smith said in a media release. “I am excited and energized to get to know our players and join the Humboldt community. We have a lot of work to be done in a short amount of time and am really looking forward to an exciting second half.”

The Hamilton, Ont. native was the head coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit for the 2017-18 season and part of the 2018-19 season. He also was head coach of the OHL's Kitchener Rangers for two seasons, associate coach of the OHL's Hamilton Bulldogs for three seasons and assistant coach for the Kitchener Rangers for seven seasons.

As a player, the 1978-born defenseman played in the ECHL, United Hockey League and the OHL.
