HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Collegiate Mohawks football team are planning to host night games that honour past alumni – but they need a way to contact them first.

That’s why Brian Grest, Horizon’s administrator of student activities, is building a database of former football players, coaches and managers. He has 979 names thanks to information from old yearbooks – but only has contact information for around 20 of them.

The football team is planning to honour its first set of alumni the evening of Friday, Sept. 13.

“It is our hope that in the next few years that at each of the alumni games, we will honour one of the former gold medal winning teams, and we thought we'd start this coming year by honoring the first ever gold medal team from 1975,” Grest said.

The Mohawks have won five gold medals total.

“I'm looking for contact information, because I would love to be able to find a way to let them know about the alumni game and invite them to be part of it, especially the 1975 gold medal winning team,” Grest said.

Grest is asking any football alumni to send their first and last names, years played, their current community, an email address and a cell number to brian.grest@horizonsd.ca. He’d also like a land line, if applicable, and a mailing address. The information will not be shared and only used to communicate with alumni.

The day after the alumni game, Saturday, Sept. 14, the football team is planning to hold a breakfast where the 1975 team will have an opportunity to share stories about their gold medal-winning year.

“We'll try and use that as a fundraiser to raise money for the current team,” Grest said. “This is also a way that the alumni can help support the current team.”
