TISDALE — More details about the 2019 TELUS Cup West Regional, which will be hosted in Tisdale, have been released.

The event will be held from Thursday, April 4 to Sunday, April 7, with a breakfast held on the first day that will be open to the public. There will be a banquet Saturday before the finals on Sunday.

“It’s going to be an excellent event with some solid entertainment. We’re trying to make it a big community event,” said Scott Janke, the co-chair of the organizing committee. “It’s first and foremost a hockey tournament but we’re trying to make it an event where everybody can be part of it and watch some phenomenal hockey.”

Janke said the organizing committee and its subcommittees are in place and they’re working to finalize the plans.

“We’re going to have an official kickoff for it Oct. 26 of this year. There’s a Trojan game that night, we’ll have a chamber social beforehand that’s tied into that,” he said, adding that more details about where to buy tickets, how much they’ll cost, and what the tournament’s going to look like will be publicly released that day.

The co-chair said a sponsorship drive to secure funding for the tournament is currently ongoing.

“We’re going to need a lot of volunteers to run an event this size, like any of the big events in town,” he said, adding he’s hoping that locals will keep their calendars open during the event to help.

The winner of the 2019 TELUS Cup West Regional will represent the western region in the midget AAA national championship. The Tisdale Trojans are guaranteed to be in the event but are aiming to earn first place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. If they do so, then the second-place winner will go to the tournament.

The last time Tisdale hosted the event was in 2006.
