HUMBOLDT — There was plenty of ‘hurry hards’ to be heard in Humboldt this past weekend with the CurlSask Junior Men's qualifiers at the Humboldt Uniplex.

Fifteen teams from curling clubs across the province competed on Dec. 6 to 8 with four teams moving on to compete at the provincial championship in Saskatoon from Dec. 27 to Jan 1.

The Nathan Pomedli rink from Saskatoon’s Nutana Curling Club saw a successful weekend with a first round bye and two straight wins to take the first qualifying spot on Saturday afternoon.

Play would continue with the Gavin Steckler rink from Saskatoon’s Sutherland Curling Club taking their loss to Pomedli and competing against the Josh Bryden rink from Regina’s Callie Curling Club. Steckler would take the W and Bryden would take the loss into the next round to compete and win qualifying spot number three in one of the last two games on Sunday afternoon.

The Matthew Drewitz rink from Saskatoon’s Sutherland Curling Club saw an early loss against the Steckler rink but would take their next two matches in order to take the fourth and final qualifying spot during the last two games on Sunday.

They will join the four men’s qualifying teams from the competition in Estevan to compete for the chance to go to Nationals in Langley, B.C. in January.

Also competing at provincials will be the eight qualifying Women’s Juniors teams that won competitions in Yorkton on Nov. 22 to 24 and Tisdale on Dec. 6 to 8.

Jim Wilson, CurlSask’s vice-president, was also in Humboldt for the qualifying event and said he saw some great curling, a sign of great programs across the province.

“Our junior programs are just well looked after. The coaching now is becoming wonderful. We’re getting the standards up and we’re getting the proper coaches here coaching these young people.”

No matter who takes the provincial championship, Wilson predicts a strong Saskatchewan showing at the National event and Saskatchewan needs a win, he said.

Humboldt has once again delivered on a terrific hosting site, Wilson said, with tremendous ice and a great facility. Wilson said the city has everything CurlSask needs to continue hosting high caliber events such as provincial qualifiers.
