HUMBOLDT — Work has begun on the replacement of water mains under 16th Street and its subsequent repaving. The cost of the project was higher than budgeted.

At a special meeting May 3, council approved a $2.14 million bid from Brockman Enterprises to replace water mains under 16th Street from Eight Avenue to 12th Avenue, 11th Avenue from Centennial Crescent to 16th Street, and Eight Avenue from Fifth Street to Sixth Street.

The work also includes repaving 16th Street for 8th Avenue to 12th Avenue.

The city had budgeted $1.86 million for the project. Brockman Enterprises' bid was the lowest one.

Peter Bergquist, the city’s public works director, told council that the costs of pipe and roadworks has gone up, resulting in the increased costs. He said he had the consulting engineer for the project look at similar projects and they found the prices were in line with what they were experiencing.

“I’m very pleased that it’s a local tender that’s coming across,” said Michael Behiel, Humboldt’s mayor. “I’d like to see us remaining local whenever possible.”

In a letter to residents, the city said on the week of May 11, temporary water lines will be set up for the residents along 16th Street from 8th Avenue to the southern entrance of Jubilee Drive. For the week of May 17, that section of 16th Street will be closed to traffic.

In June, 16th Street from Jubilee Drive to 11th Avenue will be worked on, with that part of 16th Street closed.

In August, the road structure of 16th Street from 8th Avenue to 12 Avenue will be rebuilt. Once all of the underground work has been completed, the road surface will be repaved.
