HUMBOLDT — Humboldt stands to benefit from a unique shopping trip that brings visitors from the major cities.

Women on the Go Tours was founded by a group of businesswomen that came up with the idea of a road trip to bring shoppers to their rural community for a unique experience. They used to conduct tours to Humboldt until around five years ago.

So the Humboldt and District Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the city’s cultural services department, decided to get a hold of Cheryl Hughes, who runs the tours, and asked her to come back.

“It didn't take long for us to figure out this was a good idea,” said Brent Fitzpatrick, the chamber’s executive director. “We have a total of nine businesses in the downtown area that are involved in this this year.”

The tour came on Sept. 13. The visitors hopped downtown, visited cultural offerings like the water tower and Original Humboldt, stopped at a local greenhouse, and ate at local restaurants.

“The benefit is that that we're taking money that's new to Humboldt that would not normally be spent here,” Fitzpatrick said. “They're spending money here and that's the benefit. This is new money, so that's the best money there is.”

Fitzpatrick said that there’s the potential to have more tours visit Humboldt in the future.

“We wanted to test the waters and prove to the community that this can work in there and there's benefit to taking part in programs like this.”
