TISDALE — Renovations on the Tisdale RECplex are complete.

The renovations saw repairs on the building’s roof which had cracks causing leaks. The project was supposed to be completed at the end of August, but the roofers discovered they had to replace more steel decking than anticipated. This meant more of the ceiling curtains used for insulation had to be temporary removed.

The $1.3 million project began in April, a month later than planned. In October, the cost rose to $161,000 more than expected due to foam spray that was applied in 2004, during the last work the RECplex roof had undergone.

“That probably caused the damage to the structure, the rusted roof deck that had to be replaced and all that repainting of the rusted deck and things,” said Greg Howes, a roofing consultant hired by the town, during an October 2018 discussion with Tisdale council. “It didn’t solve the problem. It actually made the problem worse but to no fault to anyone on the council, they didn’t know. They went with their engineer’s recommendations.”

Part of that additional cost due to the spray foam was the replacement of the Hanover Room roof, which also had leaks.

“It started to leak midpoint through the project,” Howes said. “It was the only roof left which would have had that spray foam on it which we removed.”

The new roof has a 15-year warranty.

“The work is done, everything on the project has been completed,” said Brad Hvidston, Tisdale’s town administrator. “I guess just the only thing we’re waiting on now is just [Howes’] is going to give one final report once the snow melts in the spring. We’ll get in there and just make sure everything is cleaned up, because there was just a bunch of debris laying around before it snowed.”

If more work needs to be done come the spring, the town will contact Atlas-Apex Roofing.
