NIPAWIN— Four full-time and one part-time employee will be laid off as Thomas Motors closes its doors in Nipawin for the last time.

Thomas Motors is a powersports vehicles, marine, and autos dealership with locations in both Melfort and Nipawin

“It upsets me a lot,” said Darrell Farley, general manager at the business in Nipawin. “I’ve told people if the economy is good, if we’re making money, we’re never going anywhere— but it’s not enough business to get to a break even point.”

The location officially closes their doors on Feb. 28, but Farley said they “may hang on a bit” to sell parts.

Back when the business was making a profit, Farley said the strongest business they had were selling recreational vehicle parts.

“In this business, lots of standalone recreational vehicle businesses have been slowly closing. I think I know about six off the top of my head that has closed in this last year,” he said.

“The margins we used to make aren’t there anymore.”

Farley said he doesn’t know if their closure will impact Thomas Motors in Melfort.

“The amount of people that can afford to buy this kind of stuff has gone downhill quite quickly.”
