EAST CENTRAL — After a vote, 85 per cent of teachers voted to accept a new four-year agreement with the province.

The agreement includes a two per cent salary increase in years two, three and four. It will be effective from Sept. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2023.

One of the major concerns raised by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation was class size and composition.

“Acceptance of this agreement does not signal that teachers’ concerns have been addressed,” said Patrick Maze, the federation’s president.

“However, teachers recognize the world has changed dramatically and settling the contract enables them to focus their energy on supporting their students by continuing to adapt their teaching strategies and provide quality emergency remote learning for the rest of this school year.”

To address class complexity, the federation said it is participating in a new provincial class size and composition committee.

The 13,000 members of the federation could vote on May 19 to 21.
