ST. BRIEUX — An effort by the St. Brieux Kin Club to create a greenspace at a local seniors’ centre has received a $15,000 boost.

The greenspace at the New Horizons Centre is one of 10 in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to be receiving funds from Red River Mutual’s Spruce Up Your Story sponsorship program, which aims to rejuvenate and preserve community gathering spaces. In total, more than $150,000 is being given this year.

“The planned greenspace includes rain barrels, benches, pathways, shrubs and a gazebo, as well as an area for outdoor games and activities – a lovely space to enjoy during the summer months,” said the program’s entry on the St. Brieux project. “Currently, the town does not have a greenspace and the community members feel this is something they are truly missing.”

This is the second year Red River Mutual has done the sponsorship program.

“After last year’s overwhelming response, we knew we had to carry the program forward,” said Brian Esau, the president and CEO of Red River Mutual. “Seeing the real impact of these improvements really strengthened our commitment to give back to the communities we serve and go beyond just insurance.”

This year, the program received more than 240 submissions.

The submitted renovation or beautification projects were evaluated based on community use and significance, their commitment to sustainability, and connections to a local insurance brokerage, the company said.
