HUMBOLDT — St. Augustine School has received approval from the city to install a new, LED display sign on its southern wall facing Glenn Hall Drive.

The approval was given at the June 10 council meeting.

The new sign, which should hopefully be up by the end of the school year, can be changed through any school computer to display scrolling text and graphics, said principal Cal Theisen.

It will be a companion to the existing, standard roadside sign. Given its sliding characters, the current sign is limited to the number of characters available and takes over an hour to change.

“It's just not a good use of time and it's a pain in the butt in the wintertime,” Theisen said. He said the old sign will still be used by the school for long-term messages.

The sign will be located double the minimum required distance of 15 metres from a residential property line. It will be equipped with an automatic dimmer that can be adjusted at the city's discretion.

The city’s sign bylaw also bans the sign from showing videos that are longer than 10 seconds or playing any sound.
