MELFORT — Melfort’s Spruce Haven Accessible Playground has received an international award.

The Dr. Lucija Čikeš Award recognizes a community that assists people with special needs and challenges. The award was given by Fiscalis, which is a partner organization of Croatia Communities in Bloom.

The park was nominated by Melfort Communities in Bloom.

“We’re pretty excited about that. We knew about it for a while so it’s nice to finally be able to talk about it,” said Peggy George, volunteer with Melfort Communities in Bloom. “We’re very happy with it.”

George said they nominated Melfort while at a Communities in Bloom national symposium in Nova Scotia.

“There’s a real international relationship within the program, so that’s how this all came about. When I was at the symposium I was told about this award and it was suggested we should apply, we should nominate our park – so we did.”

The playground opened in July 2019.

George said Melfort has lots of parks, but none of them were totally accessible for people with disabilities until Spruce Haven.

“It’s totally accessible, which is the main reason we won this award. It’s the criteria of the award, it’s wheelchair accessible, intellectual accessible and it’s just a fabulous space.”
