NIPAWIN — Brian Starkell has confirmed that he is no longer Nipawin’s fire chief.

“As of Friday morning Nov. 1, I was terminated effective immediately as the Nipawin fire chief,” Starkell told the East Central Recorder, adding he didn’t wish to expand on the departure further.

Starkell started firefighting in 1976 for the Village of Codette as a junior firefighter. He aged his way to being a regular firefighter, before eventually being appointed as chief of the department.

Starkell then began attending Nipawin Fire Department training nights. After attending training nights, he applied for and received the role of safety media officer with the department.

Starkell was then awarded the position of fire chief with the Town of Nipawin when the previous fire chief retired in 2010.

In August of this year Starkell was named an ambassador of the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association.
