RM OF TORCH RIVER — Open burning is believed to be the cause of a structure fire which destroyed a barn north west of Love.

The Nipawin Fire Department responded to the call on April 17 at 3:25 p.m.

“Given the travel distance, the chances of catching a fire in the early stages are slim, but we were able to save several green bins and a couple of exposures, said David Balding, Nipawin’s fire chief. “There were a couple farming implements as well we were able to look after.”

Balding said while there were losses, the property owner expressed “considerable interest” in ensuring the green bins for grain were kept safe.

“There was a lineup of about 11 of those in front of the barn. We were able to make certain they didn’t suffer extensive damage from the barn as it came down,” he said.

“That was his priority, so that’s what we listened to. Our guys worked long and hard on that fire.”

The barn has been ruled a total loss.

No animals were harmed in the barn fire.

Balding asked the public that if they want to do open burning, ensure the conditions are safe and never leave the fire unattended.

“Don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1, as I said, the travel distances can be long. The sooner we get there, the better we are able to help.”
