WYNYARD — A new $10 million arena for Wynyard is expected to be complete by the late spring.

Sigourney Anderson, the town’s recreation director, said the exterior cladding is newly complete, a lot of the framing inside is finished, drywalling has started in some areas and the glass in the lobby is installed.

The project began February 2018.

“It'll be a hub for the community as the rink is now and it's a way to keep the community growing, keep the community together,” Anderson said. “Without an arena, a small town like Wynyard, I think, would be lost.”

The new arena will replace the Wynyard Memorial Arena, which was built in the 1950s.

“It's at the end of its life,” Anderson said. “There be cracks in the floor and things that are just make it very expensive to repair.”

The new facility will have a rink, it will have space to serve the nearby sports grounds and it will be the golf club’s new clubhouse.

“We're hoping that lots of people in the area will come out and enjoy it, not just Wynyard residents,” Anderson said.
