WATROUS — A new school build in Watrous has joined the Horizon School Division’s wish list to the province.

Each year, the provincial education ministry asks each school division to submit a few major capital projects. They’ll then consider which projects will be funded in future provincial budgets.

With the Lanigan K-12 school being funded by the province off of the Horizon School Division’s 2020 list, this opened up a new space for Watrous.

“The high school is an aging building that has a courtyard that is just a water trap, so we’ve got some issues there,” said Kevin Garinger, Horizon School Division’s director of education.

“It’s really exciting and brings a lot of opportunity for the community and our children ultimately to be in a new facility, and one that would meet needs in a more effective and proficient way.”

He added that the new build would ideally hold somewhere between 400 to 500 students.

At the top of the list for the division continues to be a major renovation for Muenster School, as it has for a number of years.

The Muenster School renovation would include a relocation of the school’s office, as well as move the industrial arts program in-house.

The division's board of education voted in favour of the submission at its Feb. 17 meeting.
