NAICAM — Garbage pick up is becoming easier for local communities as more and more across the region are switching to REACT’s curbside pick up system.

As of July 28, the Town of Naicam will join other communities that have made the switch with the truck coming every second Tuesday for garbage disposal from the provided bins.

While curbside garbage pick up is an inevitability across the province, Rodger Hayward, Naicam’s mayor, said residents have been asking for the town to make the switch.

“It improves the look of the town. You don't have your bags sitting street-side once a week to get picked up [with] the cats out and the dogs out. It's just a neater, cleaner way of doing it.”

Residents will also have a bin at their homes to put their garbage bags in throughout the week that will make household disposal easier, Hayward said.

Curbside pick up is also safer for workers compared to communities leaving bags out on the street for workers to pick up, said Lyle Ruf, Operations Manager for REACT.

“Some people tend to overfill bags and you wind up with repetitive lift injuries from guys doing that for a number of years.”

Recycling will stay the same in Naicam, with the blue bin centre working well for residents, Hayward said. The town will be making schedules available for Naicam residents to avoid any confusion with pick up dates.
