MELFORT — Melfort Youth Evolution is starting a new program to address healthy teen relationships, gender inclusion, bullying and all other forms of violence.

The new program, KEEP IT 100, will be a year-long program with monthly four hour workshops.

“We had planned to do a weekly drop-in programming at our new building, it has a nice sized activity room, but because of COVID-19, we’ve had to rethink how we’re going to deliver the program,” said Kathryn Carswell, youth coordinator with NEOSS, and adult ally of Melfort Youth Evolution.

“The older youth will mentor the younger kids – it’s youth supporting youth.”

KEEP IT 100 is free for any youth between the ages of 10 and 19 years of age, and describes itself as a safe, all-inclusive space where each participant can speak freely without judgement, fear and duress.

The program will be peer led, with special guest speakers and adult allies.

“We want to create a space where all teens can feel safe, and feel accepted, and normal and they can learn to live lives that are free of violence,” Carswell said. “Violence is just never an answer, and we want to start young.”

This program is a part of Melfort Youth Evolution’s annual focus, which for the 2020 year is bullying prevention.

NEOSS has received a $25,000 grant from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIS) for the program.

Registration for the program will be left open until capacity is filled. To register, or for more information, contact North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) at 306-752-9464,Carswell at 306-921-9966, or Jennifer Peterson at 306-874-7232.

“We will take as many youth as possible but we have to stay under 30, including our staff.”
