Melfort was just three points away from winning the highest award from Saskatchewan Communities in Bloom.

The city won the 5,000-plus population category with a four-bloom award. Last time they won the category in 2014, they received a five-bloom award.

“This is the fifth time we’ve won our category and I still get giddy,” said Peggy George, the chair of Melfort Communities in Bloom.

George told Melfort council at their Nov. 14 meeting that judges called Melfort a vibrant city with many outstanding qualities that make it a wonderful place to visit. They also commented on the strong community involvement and the training of city staff.

“It’s always nice when a new set of eyes come into your community, someone that had no reason to say these things, but they feel it and they see it and they remark on it. I think it’s really valuable.”

Rick Lang, Melfort’s mayor, said council is happy with the Communities in Bloom program and the efforts of the volunteer-based committee.

“Communities in Bloom always does an excellent job and it’s not easy because the parameters are fairly strict and to get within three points of five blooms is excellent, as five blooms are almost unheard of.”
