MELFORT — The Northern Lights Palace Pool will reopen in September, but a firm date has yet to be set.

The province announced that indoor aquatic centres can reopen July 6 as part of Phase IV of the Reopen Saskatchewan plan.

“Current guidelines require additional sanitation, restricting the use of dressing rooms and curtailing the number of patrons allowed in the facility at any one time, which makes it challenging to operate an indoor pool facility,” said Ryan Danberg, the city manager. “Right now, our plan is to open the Northern Lights Palace Pool in September provided we can do so responsibly within the guidelines in place at that time.”

Brent Lutz, the city’s community relations director, said three concerns will dictate the reopening of the aquatic centre: safety, practicality, and user demand.

This week saw the opening of the paddling pool at two of the playgrounds in Melfort. Lutz said he knows the public has been looking forward to these openings.

“With the warm weather we had last week, they would have really appreciated a place where they could cool down we're seeing high usage of our splash park at Spruce Haven.”

Lutz said the city knows how important these areas are to the public and they are determined to accommodate the health and safety rules needed for these areas to remain open for the summer.
