MELFORT — Melfort city council once again discussed the former Parkland Regional Care Centre during a recent council meeting.
Councillor April Phillips said the city does not have a use for the building and demolition would take substantial funds from the city.
“We don't have any use for that land at this time, so it just didn't make sense for us to take on something to that where we would have to clean up,” Phillips said.
The centre was a long-term care facility until its closure in 1993 and was bought and converted part of the facility into a 27-unit condominium project completed in 2010 as phase one of a three-phase project, said Brent Lutz, the development and planning director. Due to the developer’s belief that the market was not going to support the project further, no other phases came to fruition.
Phillips said she hopes that someone does come through to take on the challenges of developing the rest of the facility, but the City of Melfort will not.
“At this time it wouldn't be very viable for the city to take on something like that.”
