Melfort’s new top cop introduced himself to that city’s council.

Staff Sgt. Deon Marquis has been in command for around three and a half weeks. He was the commanding officer of the Rosthern detachment and served with Wakaw five years before that.”

“I’m looking forward to getting the lay of the land that we’ve had here,” he told council at its Feb. 14 meeting, “as well as re-evaluating how well we’re doing our policing priorities, where we’re putting our attention and addressing any concerns that the City of Melfort may have, as well as other stakeholders in the rural side of things.”

The visit made a positive impression on Rick Lang, Melfort’s mayor.

“He’s already addressed council, which is something new for us because we’ve never had that before. That shows enthusiasm and commitment, I think. I think we’ll be very pleased with him.”

The mayor said it’s hard to know what the city is getting for a new commanding officer, but he seems to be conscientious and desires to do a good job.

“My impression of him is he is getting to know the community, which is great. We’ve always had top-notch commanding officers and I’m sure we’ve got that again. We’re looking forward to working with him for sure.”
