MELFORT — The Melfort RCMP’s detachment area is expanding.

Starting May 1, the Melfort RCMP will take over coverage of Birch Hills, Brancepeth, Crystal Springs, Dixon Lake, Hagen, Jumping Lake, Struthers Lake, Waitville, Weldon and Wolverine Lake from the Prince Albert RCMP, and Meskanaw from the Wakaw RCMP.

Residents of these community will have to contact Melfort RCMP to request police services.

“This modification will result in shorter response times to many residences and businesses,” said Superintendent Ted Munro, Saskatchewan RCMP North District commander, in a media release.

“Our police officers won’t have to drive through the City of Prince Albert anymore when responding to calls for service to those communities, which can save as much as ten minutes. Improving our response times is a priority for us and is the reason behind this modification.”

RCMP said community leaders were consulted and the province approved the changes in service areas.
