MELFORT — Part of Melfort’s Main Street has been closed to traffic so the city can install a new water line.

The project, which started on June 1, is expected to take between two to three weeks depending on the weather.

The impacted area will be the 700 Block, which is the southern block of where Burns Avenue East and West intersect.

Businesses affected by this work will be notified and temporary water service will be arranged.

Traffic will be detoured to Alberta and Manitoba Streets.

“The city is planning on replacing a number of blocks of water line— however we’re waiting to see if we’re improved for federal or provincial infrastructure for a major 18 to 19 million dollar water line replacement program that we submitted for,” said Brent Lutz, Melfort’s director of development, planning and community relations.

“In the meanwhile, we’ve had to proceed without the funding to deal with what we would call, ‘the most urgent blocks of water line.’”
