MELFORT — Royal Canadian Legion Branch #30 in Melfort will be acknowledging Remembrance Day with a closed ceremony that will be live streamed for the community to view at home.

“Following the COVID protocols we only have room for 30 or 40 people. So to start out with we’re going to restrict it to Legion members and expand it if we can after that,” said Jim Graham, president of the Melfort Legion.

“We don’t expect to have very much open to the public because of that, but we’re intending to find a way to video the ceremony and have it shown on our Facebook page.”

Graham said that observing the day at home is a completely acceptable way of acknowledging Remembrance Day this year, which he feels is important to remember for the sacrifices and circumstances that led these people to go to war.

“I hope everybody continues to understand the significance of Remembrance Day and everyone takes their own time in their own way,” he said.

“Make sure you think of all the circumstances that the hundreds of thousands of people have been in over the history of Canada, and make sure they don’t forget how to observe that.”

Graham suggested that another way community members can acknowledge it is by watching the national ceremony on their TV and taking a moment of silence.

“Pay attention to the couple minutes of silence and think about the people in your family’s past and the neighbours,” he said. “They sacrificed themselves to go off and do this generous thing for their country.”

Remembrance Day takes place on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
