MELFORT — As part of the City of Melfort’s continued efforts to promote physical activity, the city has joined the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge and will be holding a sports day with larger than normal sport equipment.

Shannon Marshall, the city’s recreation programmer, said the sports day is a chance for people to give a sport a try “with a supersized twist.”

“We’ll have sports zones that include football, soccer, volleyball and baseball. Those are zones that just have supersized equipment.”  Marshall said.

“There will be coaches or sports leaders in the community on hand to help people learn new skills and drills in a fun-sized way.”

In addition, a family fun zone will be established with extra-large lollipop rackets, jumbo badminton, wicked-pong, giant bowling, tri-cross, jumbo Frisbees, belly bumpers, unicorn hoppers, and a bouncy castle.

“[It’s] really just a fun day for the community out in the park. There will still be COVID guidelines and regulations, but we will have staff on hand to help monitor and regulate those, and all sports equipment will be sanitized in-between use.”

The “larger than life” sports event will take place on June 19 at the Spruce Haven Park from 1 to 4 p.m.

Attendees are not required to pre-register.

The National ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge is a national physical activity initiative running from June 1- 30 that encourages Canadians to get active in search of Canada's most active community.

To participate, community members must log all minutes participating in physical activities by going to www.participaction.com or the ParticipACTION app.

The community with the most minutes, based on population size, will receive $100,000 to support local physical activity initiatives.

After June 30, 50 finalist communities will be invited to submit an application explaining why they deserve to be Canada's Most Active Community.

“Head out just to have kind of a fun day with families. It’s good for children, youth or adults alike,” Marshall said. “If you’ve never been to Spruce Haven or haven’t explored it yet this summer, just come out and give things a try.”
