MELFORT — A vehicle collided with a pedestrian crossing sign on Shadd Drive in Melfort during the Alberta Clipper storm.

Fire crews responded on Jan. 14 at 10:36 p.m. to a vehicle versus sign incident.

When crews arrived they found a single vehicle in the west side ditch. The occupant was being cared for by emergency medical services.

Crews conducted traffic control until medical services transported the patient.

Shaun Stewart, Melfort’s fire chief said while the situation is still under investigation by the RCMP, there was ice all over the road.

“I never made it to the scene. I know the roads were lousy,” Stewart said. “I got part way there, and when there was RCMP, EMS were there and no entrapment, myself, I turned around and went back home. The guys that were there dealt with it.”

His advice is when there is ice on the roads, drive slowly and give yourself extra time.

“Everybody’s got to drive to the road conditions and some people are more comfortable than others. I always give myself anywhere from 20 minutes to a half-an-hour extra time to get where I need to go.”
