The Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs (SAFC) are one step closer to reaching their goal of having 12 Fire Safety Education Trailers across the province thanks to BHP.

The SAFC, who first announced plans for the project in 2015, were able to purchase their first of 12 education trailers thanks to a $30,000 donation from BHP.

The first trailer, which has been purchased, has been placed in zone 6 in Humboldt.

“We are certainly fortunate where we can partner with various businesses and community groups to take a project like this from vision to reality” said Fire Chief Russ Austin, Co-Chair of the SAFC Public Education Committee in a press release. “We are thankful to BHP who provided a huge boost to take us over the top getting this first trailer into Saskatchewan.”

The trailers will be used as an interactive way to promote education, by using props to teach school-aged children about fire safety.

Each of the 12 trailers will feature smoke machines, and heated doors, which simulate a real fire in a home. They will also be accessibility friendly for all students, and will feature a working bedroom window to simulate an escape route, an instruction area for children to listen to a safety presentation, and a flat screen television, present from the outdoors, which will show fire prevention messages to those waiting outside.

“BHP values safety and realizes the critical importance of providing fire safety education to young people and their families. This donation was made in addition to recent contributions made by BHP to support the emergency response capabilities of the region surrounding its Jansen Potash Project approximately 60 kilometers southeast of the City of Humboldt,” noted BHP in a press release.

Each of the trailers is valued at $42,000.
