Humboldt has always been home to Tanner Schatz, even after leaving to go to medical school.

Schatz will be returning to his hometown to join the Humboldt clinic on July 1 as a general practitioner, with interest in men’s health and sports medicine.

“Growing up in Humboldt I thought it was a great place. I can’t imagine a childhood being much better so I thought it would be great to come back to Humboldt and raise a family.”

Schatz will also be bringing back his fiancée, Jenelle, who will be teaching at St. Augustine.

Jenelle already has teaching experience in Humboldt, previously teaching at St. Dominic part time.

“She really enjoyed the job in town as well and so that was a big part in the decision.”

After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine and completing his residency, Schatz  spent the last three years working with the Saskatchewan Medical Association’s Rural Relief Program.

As a physician with the program, Schatz provided medical support for staff in rural communities and, in the last six months especially, northern communities like Buffalo Narrows, Île-à-la-Crosse, Beauval, and Dylan.

“It can either be help keep the hospital open if there is a lack of physicians or to give a physician some much needed time off if they’re getting overworked and there’s not a lot of other physicians in the community.”

Schatz says he hopes to continue working in rural and northern communities as part of the relief program while practicing in Humboldt.
