In the 10 days since its creation, the Fund for Humboldt Broncos GoFundMe page has raised over $12 million for the Humboldt Broncos bus crash victims and their families with more than 132,000 people donating money to the page.
Humboldt Broncos President Kevin Garinger announced at an April 16 press conference the closure of the Humboldt GoFundMe page on April 18 at 11:59 p.m.
However, there are and will be more ways to donate to the SJHL and the Humboldt Broncos after the page is taken down.
The Humboldt Broncos organization has been humbled by the unprecedented amount of donations and fundraisers the team is receiving, said Garinger at the press conference.
The HumboldtStrong Community Foundation has been created to accommodate these funds.
“The mission of the HumboldtStrong Community Foundation will be to support Humboldt Broncos’ players, employees, families, and volunteers, as well as first responders and emergency services personnel, teams, athletes, related organizations and communities affected by the crash of the Humboldt Broncos team bus on April 6, 2018, and the aftermath thereof.”
According to humboldtstrong.info, donations can be made directly to the team through their general donations account through the Conexus Credit Union.
“All funds deposited in this account will go directly to the Humboldt Broncos organization and future needs of those affected by this tragedy,” announced the website.
SJHL President Bill Chow says that many donations have also been coming in for the SJHL Assistance Program which will be “providing mental health assistance, counselling and grieving for all players of the SJHL,” according to the SJHL website.
There are many donation possibilities available, says Chow, and people need to make that decision on how to donate the money.
The SJHL referees, alongside referees from around the country, have created a fund to go to the STARS Air Ambulance, which is great, says Chow. With so many possibilities, everyone has to have that discussion on where they want the money to go, he says.
