Partners Family Services held a press conference on Monday to inform the public that Conexus Credit Union would be the major sponsor for this year’s Community Rising event.
The event will consist of three different elements, the first of which will be a Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. While it’s usually directed at men to raise awareness about violence against women, women are also invited to participate. The march involves men walking around in women’s high heels and is a fun way to encourage people to talk about the issue. Participants can also collect pledges to help raise money for the Walk a Mile In Her Shoes campaign.
Partners Family Services is requesting that participants register sooner rather than later so that they can secure a pair of high heels. Registration for the walk begins at 11 a.m. on May 4 and there will be a community barbecue downtown at the same time.
Following the march, there will be a student gala at the Humboldt Uniplex where keynote speaker Amanda Lindhout will make a presentation. Approximately 1,000 students from the surrounding area are expected to be in attendance.
Lastly, the annual Community Rising gala event will be held in the evening at Jubilee Hall, during which Lindhout will make another presentation for adults. Tickets will be go on sale on May 4 at Diamonds of Detroit and the evening will begin with cocktails at 5 p.m.
