MELFORT — Melfort city council met during the week to finalize a couple of important decisions facing the city.

The agenda included four items that needed an immediate resolution, including approval for projects using money from the Municipal Economic Enhancement Program.

The city has agreed to the sale of land between the City of Melfort and Ben Hoosier of Sasksteel. A deposit has been paid on the McDonald Avenue West property which will be used for a steel recycling business so all that was left was for the city to approve the sale.

Council also approved an agreement with the Melfort Kinsmen Club to lease the former Melfort Chamber of Commerce building in Spruce Haven Park until May 30, 2025. The monthly rental fee will be $833, but all rental fees are subject to offsets, according to the agreement. Any furnishing improvements made to the building will be put towards offsetting the rental fee and any community projects done by the Kinsmen will offset 50 per cent of the fees.

This agreement benefits both the Kinsmen and the city, said Rick Lang, Melfort’s mayor, as both will benefit from the improvements done by the Kinsmen, both from community projects and from future use of the building.

The temporary fill station off Hamilton and Broadway will see an increase in water rates. Council approved a new rate of $4.59/cubic metre at the station which will be coin operated for the time being with an eventual shift to a card lock system. The temporary station is owned by SaskWater but will be eventually transferred to the city.

The estimated cost per fill would be $3.15 for a small truck, $52.15 for a tandem fill, and $104.30 for a semi trailer fill. The city is aware of the inconvenience coin operation will be, which is why the card lock is anticipated.

Council will meet again for their regular meeting on June 15.
