Humboldt schools not among those getting new government-funded portables

The provincial government is providing money for 15 portable classrooms across the province – but the two Humboldt schools aren’t among them.

The Horizon School Division requested one portable each for Humboldt Collegiate and Humboldt Public School at its Oct. 17, 2019 board meeting.

On Feb. 18, the province announced it would provide $6 million to fund eight portables in Saskatoon, four in Swift Current, one in Regina, one in Yorkton and one in White City.

According to a formula used by the provincial education ministry, Humboldt Collegiate is at 112 per cent capacity, while Humboldt Public is at 111.

In practical terms, being above 100 per cent doesn’t mean a school is filled to the brim, as the formula doesn’t necessarily count gathering spaces or some of the technical arts classrooms.

The ministry starts thinking about providing portables to schools when they reach the 140 or 150 per cent mark. If the ministry approves the request, they would pay for the portables.

A school division can also decide to pay for the portables themselves – something Horizon did for Wadena Elementary last year.
