HUMBOLDT — Humboldt Royal Canadian Legion Branch #28 will not be holding a service at a church this year due to COVID-19. Instead a ceremony held at the Humboldt cenotaph will be live streamed through social media.

Donald Hogemann, president of the Humboldt Legion, said the ceremony is to represent the veterans that gave their lives for this country

“If you stop doing that then people start forgetting and not bothering at all,” Hogemann said.

The ceremony will start at 11 a.m. and be live streamed by Schuler & Lefebvre Funeral Chapel. The service can be found on a specific page for “live streamed services”.

“We were approached to see if we would be willing to help out,” said Deryk Meszaros, owner of the funeral chapel. “With all of the restrictions and that that are taking place all over, we wanted to make it accessible to everybody.”

Should an error occur cutting out the livestream, Meszaros said a recorded version will be placed on their site after the ceremony.

The in-person ceremony is open to the first 150 people, with a sign-in contact tracing list in case an outbreak occurs. Attendees are required to wear masks and physically distance from others not in their household.

After the ceremony, the Legion is planning to be open to the public to host artwork and essays from the Legion’s long standing poster and literary contest in their clubroom.

Hogemann said this part of the plan is still in the works, and if the Legion isn’t able to receive the submissions before Remembrance Day they may not be able to show it.
